Maidenhead Bagel Co.

Alicia and I were having a casual conversation with a new acquaintance in Montgomery when the topic unexpectedly jumped to bagels.

Immediately, our new acquaintance brightened and he said with deep enthusiasm, ďHave you been to that terrific bagel place in Lawrenceville?Ē

As a Brooklyn native, Iím duty-bound at the mention of bagels to sadly shake my head and reminisce about the superior Brooklyn bagel and lament how far I have to travel now to get a decent bagel. Iím expected to wisely opine that it must be something in the water there, or the flour, or the air, but that it cannot be duplicated or bested.

But I canít seem to do a convincing job of it since going to Maidenhead Bagel Co. in Lawrenceville.

Their bagels are terrific.

Theyíre fresh, large, and they come in a wide variety of combinations. They offer sandwiches, salads, donuts, and some of the best coffee anywhere. In fact, I originally stopped in for the coffee and then had a bagel.

I was hooked on the spot.

Bill Bogdan has owned the place for the past 10 years or so, and it had been in business, as he recalled, for at least 10 years before that.

Itís the kind of place that is busy but not overwhelming, where whether you can find a seat (obtainable most of the time) or just stand around waiting for take-out, you can get a sense of where you are and who lives there. It is one of those places that make up the heart and soul of our communities.

The staff are friendly and efficient, and the prices are very reasonable. And there is ample parking in the lot behind the shop.

One tip Iíve learned is that when ordering a sandwich, make sure to tell them if you want it on a bagel or not.

Iím especially fond of the roast beef on whole wheat (bagel or bread but always toasted) and it is a truly wonderful sandwich if you have them warm the roast beef.

Alicia has had the turkey and tomato on whole wheat (and Iíve stolen a taste) and it is also fresh and delicious.

Whether you want a great cup of coffee, some amazing bagels or a hearty meal, Maidenhead Bagel Company is an excellent choice.
